This is Martin, 8. He died in the Boston bombing yesterday. He was at the finish line with his family, waiting for his dad to cross. His mother and little sister were catastrophically injured. He was the student of our dear friend, Rachel Moo. His message resonates powerfully today. My prayer is that we all live by Martin’s words, paying tribute to his too-brief, but immeasurably valuable life by following his example.

When the shooter came to her classroom, she told him that her students were in the gym. He then gunned her down and moved on. She saved the lives of all of her students. Surviving as a teacher isn’t easy.

Between the sheer work load, diversity of tasks, brutal pace, and seemingly divergent initiatives pulling you in a thousand directions, education can break even the most noble spirits. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Below are ten tips to keep you ticking when things get tough.

1. Confucius say, Be like tree
In your goals, your practice, and even what you accept as evidence that what you do makes a difference. No when to stand form, and when to bend in the wind.

2. Learn to weather the storm
Things change in education constantly. District pushes, higher ed policy, content shifts, technological trends, etc. The more flexible you are, the better you’ll be able to sustain the frequent and often challenging storms that blow through your classroom.

3. Embrace that it’s not about you
This is easy to give lip-service to, but not always easy to sustain. At the end of the day, no matter what you do and how incredible you are, things will fail, people will falter, and efforts will fall short. You’ll have to implement asinine, half-baked ideas in your classroom not because they work, but because someone told you to. Realize that you’re not a savior, but an employee paid to do a job. It’s not your classroom, but a learning space owned by your local government or similar organization. It sounds cold, but this perspective can come in handy….

I like this because it does a good deal to diffuse some of the unrealistically high expectations that teachers tend to place upon themselves.

Numbers 2 and 10 reminded me that at the end of the day, the core of my job is solid. Despite the focus on test scores, my job will (hopefully) forever be to help students. That even if my content direction must change every now and then, the relationship between the students and me is constant. They will still show up, and so will I. They will look to me for guidance in my content area, and I will help them because I love it. That’s really what we care about at the end of the day, right?
